Ryobi 40V HP Whisper Series Trimmer — Will Your Current Spools Still Fit?

Ryobi’s 40V HP Whisper Series string trimmer (model RY40HPST02B) has been turning heads since its release — and not just because it runs roughly 86% quieter than a comparable gas trimmer. For homeowners already invested in Ryobi’s 40V ecosystem, the big question is practical: will the spools, heads, and line you already own work with this new model?

The short answer is mostly yes, but with a few details worth understanding before you stock up on replacement spools.

What makes the Whisper Series different

The RY40HPST02B uses Ryobi’s HP (High Performance) brushless motor paired with an acoustic housing designed to cut noise dramatically. The trimming mechanism itself, however, is not a brand-new invention. This model uses the same Expand-It lower attachment system found on many other Ryobi 40V and even some ONE+ 18V attachment-capable trimmers.

That means the trimmer head, spool housing, and line feed system follow the same basic design as other Expand-It compatible Ryobi trimmers. If you have been running a Ryobi 40V Expand-It model already, your existing bump-feed head and pre-wound spools should bolt right on.

Which spools and heads are compatible

Here is the breakdown:

  • Pre-wound Ryobi AC04156 spools — These are the standard 0.080” auto-feed spools used across most Ryobi 40V string trimmers. They fit the Whisper Series head without modification.
  • Ryobi Reel-Easy+ bump-feed head — If your current 40V trimmer uses the Reel-Easy+ system, the same head assembly works on the RY40HPST02B.
  • Expand-It attachments — The lower shaft disconnects and accepts any Ryobi Expand-It attachment (edger, blower, pole saw, cultivator, etc.). This is not spool-related, but it means your existing attachment investment carries over.
  • Aftermarket universal spools — Most third-party spools designed for Ryobi 40V bump-feed heads will fit. Check that the spool uses 0.080” line and matches the inner post diameter of the Ryobi head housing.

What might NOT fit

A few older Ryobi spool designs are not directly compatible:

  • Fixed-line heads from early ONE+ 18V trimmers — Some older 18V models used a fixed-line head with a different mounting thread. These do not swap onto 40V Expand-It shafts.
  • Oversized commercial-style heads — Aftermarket heads designed for gas-powered straight-shaft trimmers may have the wrong arbor size or thread pitch. Always verify the arbor matches before installing.
  • 0.095” line in stock spool housings — The factory spool housing on the Whisper Series is designed for 0.080” line. You can run 0.095” if you switch to a compatible aftermarket head, but forcing thicker line into the stock spool can cause binding and poor feed.

Battery compatibility across the 40V HP line

The Whisper Series runs on Ryobi’s 40V lithium-ion batteries, and every 40V battery Ryobi has made works with this trimmer. That includes the standard 2Ah, 4Ah, and the newer 6Ah and 8Ah HP packs. The HP batteries deliver higher sustained current to the brushless motor, which translates to more consistent power under load — useful if you are trimming thick weeds or running an edger attachment.

If you are also looking at the new 80V line, note that the 80V battery packs (like the 14Ah unit with 40% more runtime) are part of a separate platform. Those 80V packs do not fit 40V tools.

What this means for replacement parts

The Whisper Series does not require a new inventory of spools or heads. If you already have Ryobi 40V Expand-It compatible spools on hand, they will work. Stock up on 0.080” pre-wound spools (AC04156 or equivalent aftermarket) and you are covered.

For homeowners upgrading from an older Ryobi 18V or non-Expand-It 40V trimmer, this is a good time to standardize on the Expand-It spool system. The parts are widely available, the head design is proven, and aftermarket options keep replacement costs reasonable. Check our catalog for compatible Ryobi 40V trimmer spools and bump-feed heads that fit the Whisper Series and the rest of the Expand-It lineup.
