Can I Use 0.080 Line in a 0.065 Trimmer? What Usually Goes Wrong

A thicker line may seem like an upgrade, but a .065-rated head can jam, bog down, or lose runtime with .080 line.

Can I Use 0.080 Line in a 0.065 Trimmer? What Usually Goes Wrong

Sometimes you can physically fit .080" line into a trimmer that came with .065", but that does not mean the head or motor will feed it correctly. The safe answer is: use the largest line diameter the trimmer head is rated for, not the largest line you can force through the eyelet.

What changes when line gets thicker

Thicker line has more mass and more drag. That can be useful in weeds, but it also asks more from the motor and feed system.

More dragMotor bogs down
Larger diameterLine sticks in the eyelet
Heavier lineShorter battery runtime
Less flexibilityMore feed problems in small spools

When .080 can work

It can work if the head is marked for .080" and the trimmer has enough power. Many 40V cordless trimmers live in this range. Some smaller trimmers can handle .080" for light use, but only if the manufacturer allows it.

When .080 is a bad idea

Avoid .080" if:

  • The cap or spool is stamped .065" max.
  • The trimmer is a small 18V or 20V model.
  • The line already fails to auto-feed.
  • The head uses a tiny pre-wound spool.
  • The motor slows down noticeably with the thicker line.

If you need more durability but the head is limited to .065", try fresher line or a better shape before jumping gauge. Twisted line can cut cleaner than basic round line at the same diameter.

Better upgrade path

First, confirm the head’s max diameter. Then choose:

  • .065" for light grass and edging.
  • .080" for general homeowner trimming.
  • .095" for heavy weeds on stronger trimmers.

The broader guide is 0.065 vs 0.080 vs 0.095 trimmer line.

FAQ

Will thicker line damage my trimmer?

It can overwork small cordless motors and cause feed jams. Occasional use may not break the tool immediately, but it can reduce runtime and increase heat.

Why does thicker line not feed?

The spool channel, eyelet, and cap clearance may be sized for thinner line. The line binds before the feed mechanism can advance it.

Is .080 always better than .065?

No. In soft grass, .065" often cuts cleanly and gives better runtime on small cordless trimmers.
