Auto-Feed Trimmer Line Not Advancing? Before You Buy a New Spool
Auto-feed problems are often caused by wrong line diameter, bad winding, a worn cap, or debris packed inside the head.
Published · Last updated:

When auto-feed line stops advancing, the spool is not always the problem. Search results often push replacement spools, but the cause may be wrong line diameter, poor winding, a worn cap, or grass packed inside the head.

Quick diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Line feeds once then stops | Line wound too tight or wrong direction |
| Line will not pull through eyelet | Diameter too thick or eyelet worn |
| Cap pops off | Worn cap tabs or wrong cap |
| Line snaps near head | Sharp eyelet or brittle line |
| Motor bogs down | Line too heavy for trimmer |
Check line diameter first
Auto-feed heads are sensitive to line thickness. If the head is rated for .065" and you install .080", the line may fit on the spool but fail to advance through the eyelet.
Use the head rating first, then the yard condition. See can I use .080 line in a .065 trimmer for the common upgrade mistake.
Rewind problems
Line that crosses itself, is wound too tightly, or is wound the wrong direction can bind inside the spool. Remove the spool and pull a few feet of line out. If it catches or kinks, rewind it cleanly.

Cap and eyelet wear
The cap can cause feed failure. Sharp eyelets shave the line; loose caps let the spool move incorrectly; worn tabs stop the cap from holding tension.
If the cap is damaged, replace the cap before buying a pile of spools. The spool cap replacement guide shows what to match.
When to buy a new spool
Buy a replacement spool if:
- The old spool is cracked or warped.
- The hub is melted or worn.
- The line channel has sharp grooves.
- The line is old, brittle, or fused together.
- You want a quick pre-wound fix and the model fitment is confirmed.

FAQ
Why does auto-feed waste too much line?
The head may be feeding because the line is breaking, the cap spring is weak, or the spool is not seated correctly.
Can I manually pull auto-feed line?
Usually yes with the battery removed, but forcing it can mask a winding or diameter problem.
Is a bump-feed head better?
Bump-feed gives more control, but it still needs the correct line diameter and clean winding. Choose based on the trimmer and how much trimming you do.
